Opinion essays ask you to take a position and develop it clearly. A strong response is not just a list of ideas. It has one consistent answer to the question, logical paragraphing, relevant support and enough explanation for the reader to follow your reasoning.
First decide exactly what you think
Before writing, reduce the prompt to a simple decision: agree, disagree, or agree to a qualified extent. Your introduction and conclusion should communicate the same position. If your body paragraphs argue in opposite directions without explaining your final view, the essay can feel unclear.
A reliable 4-paragraph structure
Introduction: paraphrase the topic and state your position.
Body paragraph 1: give your strongest reason, explain it and support it with a specific example or consequence.
Body paragraph 2: develop a second reason or a carefully controlled qualification that still supports your overall position.
Conclusion: restate the position and summarise the main reasoning without introducing a new argument.

Introduction: paraphrase the spending choice and state that public transport should receive greater priority, while roads still require maintenance.
Body 1: explain capacity and limited urban space. Give an example of frequent rail or bus services moving commuters along busy corridors.
Body 2: explain how convenient transport can reduce car dependency and congestion. Add the qualification that essential road repairs remain necessary.
Conclusion: confirm that transport investment should be prioritised because it addresses mobility at scale, without claiming roads should receive no funding.
What makes a body paragraph strong?
Use a simple chain: claim → explanation → example or consequence → link back to the question. Many weak essays stop after the claim. For example, “public transport reduces congestion” is only a starting point. Explain how and why that effect occurs, then connect it to the spending decision in the prompt.
Common opinion-essay mistakes
No clear position: the introduction discusses both sides but never answers the question.
Changing position: the introduction says “agree,” one body paragraph argues the opposite, and the conclusion becomes neutral.
Memorised template language: long generic phrases take space without adding meaning.
Too many ideas: four undeveloped reasons are usually less convincing than two well-explained ones.
Examples that replace explanation: an example should support your reasoning, not become a separate story.
